Meet the AMiMO Cluster: Pioneering Excellence in Modular Manufacturing

The Formation of AMiMO

In a significant stride towards revolutionising the landscape of manufacturing, MODAPTO, along with the MARS, MODUL4R, and ONE4ALL projects, has forged the AMiMO cluster. Standing for Automated Manufacturing with Intelligent Modules, AMiMO unites these projects under the auspices of the Horizon Europe Programme to focus on excellence in distributed control and modular manufacturing.

Cluster Objectives

AMiMO is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of production systems through the utilisation of cyber-physical modules. The cluster’s goals include:

  • Enhancing the impact of individual projects by expanding their reach and applications.
  • Facilitating a significant dissemination and communication of advanced scientific developments across Europe.
  • Enabling resource sharing and collaboration among leading experts who are united in their research endeavors.
  • Strengthening the network and cooperation among EU-funded research projects to foster a collaborative ecosystem.

Participating Organisations and Their Roles

The cluster actively engages with a multitude of esteemed institutions:

  • MODAPTO is represented by Athens Technology Center and Université de Lorraine.
  • MODUL4R’s voices are Fraunhofer IWU and CORE IC.
  • EXELISIS IKE and CRIT champion the ONE4ALL project.
  • ENSAM and Steinbeis Europa Zentrum bring insights from MARS.

The latest AMiMO Cluster meeting welcomed a new member, the DMaaST Project, presented by Irene Paoletti.

Cluster Meetings and Progress

Since its inception, AMiMO has organised several key meetings, each fostering deeper collaboration and understanding among its members, with meetings held on July 10th, 2023, on October 11th, 2023, on February 6th, 2024, and on April 19th, 2024. There is also an upcoming meeting planned for this September.

Key Actions and Achievements

         1. Name and Vision

AMiMO was aptly named to reflect its core mission: to innovate manufacturing through intelligent modules.

        2.Cooperation Framework

Initially set as a cooperation agreement by ONE4ALL, legal challenges prompted a shift to a Memorandum of Understanding, ensuring all legalities are meticulously addressed.

        3. Cross-Information Dissemination

Efforts have been made to enhance visibility and interaction across social media platforms, with partners encouraged to engage with and promote sister project initiatives.

        4. INCOM 2024 Contributions

Although the planned special session at INCOM 2024 was withdrawn, efforts by representatives like Alexandre Voisin and Doru S. Andreiana highlight the commitment to share knowledge and foster dialogue in digital transitions for flexible manufacturing systems.

Future Directions

  • Cluster Functionality Map
    • A proposed functionality map aims to identify synergies and complementarities, setting the stage for integrated services and enhanced cooperative output.
  • Standardisation Workshop
    • Plans are underway to explore standardisation topics that could benefit from a collaborative workshop, aiming to align standards across projects.
  • Unified Dissemination Efforts
    • Joint materials, including roll-ups, letters of intent, flyers, and brochures, are in the pipeline to effectively communicate the cluster’s goals and achievements at various events.

Conclusion

The AMiMO cluster stands as a beacon of innovation and collaboration within the European research landscape, advancing the capabilities of modular manufacturing with intelligent solutions. Through ongoing cooperation and shared goals, AMiMO is establishing new standards in the manufacturing sector, promising a future where flexibility and technology converge to meet the dynamic needs of industries.
