MODAPTO: Pioneering the Future of Modular and Digitally-Connected Manufacturing

Guest article by CRF – Partner perspective

The European project MODAPTO is setting new standards for smart, sustainable, and adaptive manufacturing. In an era where industries face constant change and increasing complexity, MODAPTO introduces a revolutionary approach based on modular, reconfigurable systems and advanced Digital Twin technologies.

Driving Innovation in Manufacturing
MODAPTO’s mission is clear: to transform production processes through cutting-edge solutions that enable flexibility, efficiency, and resilience. The project focuses on four key pillars:

  • Interoperable Digital Twins for real-time monitoring and optimization

  • Intelligent production planning to adapt to dynamic market demands

  • Energy-efficient robotic systems for sustainable operations

  • Three industrial demonstrators showcasing practical applications across Europe

  • A Strong European Partnership
MODAPTO brings together leading research institutes, technology providers, and industrial partners from across Europe, including CRF, ILTAR-Italbox, and organizations such as Athens Technology Center, Fraunhofer IOSB, Université de Lorraine, University of Piraeus, Athens University of Economics and Business, EKS, BOC, AEGIS, Lithuanian Innovation Centre, FFT  and SEW Usocome. This collaboration ensures a robust ecosystem for innovation and knowledge sharing.

    Transforming Automotive Logistics
Within the automotive sector, MODAPTO addresses one of the most challenging areas: kit preparation and distribution. Traditionally manual and lacking real-time visibility, these processes are now being revolutionized through modular, self-aware kit holders (KH) equipped with sensors and diagnostic capabilities.
    Key achievements include:

    • Up to 25% reduction in kit preparation time

    • Real-time alerts for wear and damage

    • Seamless integration with existing logistics infrastructure

CRF has developed an automated kit preparation station using collaborative robotics and coordinated pilot demonstrators across all end-user sites. In partnership with ILTAR-Italbox, CRF also designed smart, modular containers for Stellantis logistics, featuring reconfigurable structures and embedded electronics for geolocation, component tracking, and damage detection.

    Impact and Future Outlook
MODAPTO lays the foundation for a digitally connected, efficient, and sustainable supply chain, ensuring smoother production flows, improved logistics, and enhanced product quality. This project represents a significant step toward the Factory of the Future, where adaptability and intelligence drive competitiveness.
