MODAPTO Pilot 1 – FFT: Enhanced Capabilities for Robotic Systems in Manufacturing

As production lines evolve to meet the demands of customised manufacturing, the ability to design, test, and optimise robotic systems with flexibility and sustainability in mind has never been more crucial.

Within the MODAPTO project, FFT is leading Pilot 1 to enhance robotic systems used in automotive and aerospace manufacturing. The focus? Smarter automation for tasks like spot-welding and roller hemming—powered by flexible, energy-efficient robots.

FFT’s production modules already use Digital Twins, but MODAPTO takes this further by integrating standardised Digital Twins via AAS. These enable robots to optimise energy use and reduce emissions during both design and operation.

MODAPTO’s system enhances robot-assisted production processes through five key steps:

  1. The Robot Simulation User chooses the right robot size and joining tech.

  1. The Robot Simulation User adjusts motions to improve efficiency and track sustainability KPIs.

  1. The robot programmer is performing the Physical commissioning at the customer’s site, implementing robot movements from virtual commissioning and analyses the interaction with other plant components.

  1. The Virtual Commissioning Engineer assesses the design impact on the production process, evaluating the impact of the new robot design setup.

  1. The Plant Operator tests the physical robot on the production line, validating its performance in terms of production and sustainability criteria.

Innovation Through Sustainability and Movement Optimisation

By introducing Sustainability Analytics and Robot Movement Optimisation, FFT’s systems can reduce energy use by up to 10% and emissions by 5%. These innovations are scalable—benefitting manufacturers of all sizes.
